Sapphire, is a precious gemstone often called as birthstone, a transparent, blue
mineral stone. Sapphire has a hardness of 9, a specific gravity near 4.00, and
refractive indexes of 1.76–1.77. Sapphire is available in yellow, brown, green, pink,
orange, purple, colorless, and black colors.

Various impurities such as chromium, iron, and titanium in aluminum oxide influence
the color of sapphire. Sapphire is usually blue in color, best color is cornflower blue
often called Kashmir blue. Sapphire is also available in different colors; colorless,
precious corundum is often known as white sapphire; yellow corundum is also called
yellow or golden sapphire, or Oriental topaz; and pale pink stones are known as pink
sapphire.

Some of the best sapphires are found in sand and grate in Sri Lanka. Some Sri
Lanka sapphires display convex form and not faceted, highly valued sapphires. Some
of the Sapphires are found in Thailand, India, Afghanistan, China, the Ural Mountains
and in the former Soviet Union, and Queensland, Australia. Sapphires are also found
in the United States, in the corundum deposits of Macon County, North Carolina, and
near Helena, Montana.

Apart from jewelry Sapphires are used, as are rubies, as hard bearings in watches
and scientific apparatus. Synthetic sapphires are produced in a manner similar to
that used for synthetic rubies.

Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September, It is also one of the birth
stones for the Zodiac signs of Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius.
